Tribe calls for joint review of pipeline route

CANNON BALL – The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe “strongly disputes” the claim that no sacred sites were destroyed by Dakota Access Pipeline construction on Sept. 3 and calls for tribal participation in the review, the tribe said in a statement Friday.

An early draft of a memo that was leaked earlier this week states that no human remains or significant sites were found in the pipeline construction zone during a Sept. 21 survey by seven archaeologists from the State Historical Society.

But Jon Eagle Sr., the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s historic preservation officer, said in a statement the state archaeologist has an ongoing investigation regarding the destruction of gravesites and other cultural sites along a portion of the pipeline area.
