A federal grand jury has returned a 20-count indictment charging eight current and former Omaha Tribal Council members and one tribal employee with various offenses related to illegal payments they made to themselves from federal funds.
Nebraska U.S. Attorney Deborah R. Gilg announced the indictments Thursday and said they were the result of an investigation by the FBI and Office of Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Maurice Johnson, attorney general for the northeast Nebraska tribe, declined to comment, calling the situation an ongoing criminal matter.
