Sacred Heart Greenwich collaborates with school on Indian reservation

GREENWICH — On the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in southwestern South Dakota, buffalo wander the open plains, prairie dogs poke out of tunnels off the side of the road and pronghorns move in herds through the grass.

Though the wildlife is striking, the 2.8 million acre reservation also has its troubles. The reservation of 40,000 people is the second poorest county in the United States. Pine Ridge has 80 percent unemployment and an infant mortality rate five times higher than the U.S. national average.

For the past four years, a Sacred Heart English teacher has been fostering a partnership between his school and the reservation’s Red Cloud Indian School.
