Today Is World Suicide Prevention Day: Remember Native Youth

Not only is September 10, 2016 is World Suicide Prevention Day, the week of September 5-11 is National Suicide Prevention Week.

While nationally suicide does tend to skew middle-aged and white, according to Huffington Post, among Native Americans, 40 percent of those who walk on from suicide are aged 15 to 24.

“Alcohol and drug abuse and addiction feed into suicide attempts and suicide deaths. All are tied in with self-concept; how we feel about ourselves and the inner pain we try to mitigate by medicating ourselves with legal and illegal substances while most of us cannot even identify the source of the pain. Even if we can identify it we have a very strong belief (maybe even an addiction) that we cannot do anything about,” says Harold Monteau in a column for ICTMN.

The International Association for Suicide Prevention offers suggested activities for World Suicide Prevention Day, along with ways to connect with others.
