Allies of the former chairman of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe swept into power Tuesday, claiming the six-seat tribal council.
The victory represented a defeat to a group of reformers who won seats in the last election two years ago. That group had attempted to break the more than three-decade tenure that former Chairman Michael Jandreau held on the tribal government.
The six victors include former council members who served on previous councils under Jandreau, including Chairman-elect Boyd Gourneau, Vice-Chairman-elect Darrell Middletent, Secretary Orville “Red” Langdeau and Council Member-elect John McCauly. Jandreau died last year.
