Panel recommends removing controversial art from Governor's Room

A state art committee believes the state of Minnesota should remove two pieces of art from the Governor's Reception Room inside the state Capitol.

The Art Subcommittee of the Minnesota State Capitol Preservation Subcommittee's final report, submitted last month, is the latest chapter in a years-long debate over whether artwork deemed racist or sexist but bearing historical import should remain on display as workers wrap up the Capitol's most recent renovation.

In the report, the subcommittee recognizes all Capitol artwork currently on display as significant but recommends moving "Father Hennepin at the Falls of St. Anthony" and "The Treaty of Traverse des Sioux" to other locations "with appropriate interpretation."
