Man gets nearly 20 years in prison in sexual conduct case

WALKER—A 43-year-old man was sentenced Monday to almost 20 years in prison in Cass County District Court for a criminal sexual conduct offense that happened in 2007.

The Cass County Attorney's Office reported Elton James Curtis of Fargo, N.D., was sentenced by Judge Jana Austad to 19 and-a-half years for felony first-degree criminal sexual conduct. On top of his prison sentence, he also has a 10-year conditional release period and will have to register as a predatory offender.

According to court records, Curtis had his first appearance on Dec. 10, 2014, where he was charged with six felony criminal sexual conduct charges. He pled not guilty to all six charges this past April and was convicted on four counts of criminal sexual conduct on June 29. The other two charges were dismissed. The felony charge he was sentenced for was first-degree criminal sexual conduct where he used penetration or had contact with a person under age 13.
