Gathering of Native Americans (GONA) held on August 17-19, 2016 at the Red Lake Humanities Center - P4

The Gathering of Native Americans (GONA) was held on August 17-19, 2016 at the Red Lake Humanities Center from 8:30 AM to 5 PM.

GONA is a community wide training focusing on a comprehensive look at strategies necessary for health and wellness through culturally centered resources. This training was facilitated by Seprieono Locario, SAMSHA and Maegen Ray, Youth Wellness Specialist.

Key points of this training were "Belonging Mastery Interdependence Genorosity" and activities included team building, craft tables and the Suicide Prevention Walk on Friday from Redby to Red Lake.

Recent statistics show that 81% of native men and 84% of native women experience violence in their lifetime. Suicide is the second highest cause of death of native youth between the ages of 15-24 who make up over 41% of the total Native population--and at a rate that is 2.5 times the national average.

Everyone is welcome to attend free of charge.

The training was sponsored by Red Lake Family and Children Services and Gidinawendamin (Tiwahe).
