Beltrami County to create new job training program

BEMIDJI -- Beltrami County is altering its strategy for workforce training, with a decision coming from the Board of Commissioners on Tuesday to continue the transition process.

The county plans to end an employment and training program through contracted services and is opting to create a new department called Workforce Impact.

"With welfare reform a couple decades ago, it was changed so that people could only be on public support for five years. So at the same time, the state started to direct money to counties to help provide people with work opportunities," said Kay Mack, Beltrami County administrator. "Those are consolidated funds that have been coming our way for many years. In all of those years, we had been meeting our state obligations, but had been doing them through contracted services."
