Man sentenced for buying Native American human remains

In the first case of its kind handled by the federal court in Columbus, a Jackson County man was sentenced Thursday for violating the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, for purchasing human remains of Native Americans.

Mark M. Beatty, 57, of Wellston, was sentenced to three years probation, including three months of home confinement. U.S District Judge Edmund A. Sargus Jr. also ordered Beatty to pay a $3,500 fine plus an additional $1,000 in restitution to the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma, to be used for reburial of the remains.

Beatty also agreed to pay for an advertisement in a general-circulation newspaper that will warn others not to engage in the illegal excavation of Native American bones.
