Often associated with the most sought-after athletes or top tech talent, the signing bonus is now becoming a mainstay of the Bay Area teacher-recruitment field.
Amid a statewide teacher shortage and the region's affordable housing woes, more school districts are offering bonuses that can range from $1,000 to $10,000 for hard-to-fill positions in special education, math, science, dual immersion language, and for speech pathologists and school psychologists.
One hot candidate was 30-year-old Cuauhtemoc Mixcoatl-Martinez, who scored $10,000 in signing bonuses for taking a job with Pittsburg Unified. He earned $5,000 for being a dual immersion language teacher and the rest as a special perk known as the "Pittsburg Pride" incentive, for any new or experienced teacher who graduated from Pittsburg Unified and decides to return to their alma mater to teach.
