Six Nations firefighters shine at national contest

OHSWEKEN – Jesse Brant was exuberant as she watched members of a Six Nations firefighters team competing as “Ontario” against contenders in a Saskatchewan team in the 27th annual National Aboriginal Firefighters Competition in the Gaylord Powless Arena.

“I think we're doing very well,” Brant, the captain of the Ontario team, said in an interview Saturday as she stood with members.

In fact, the Ontario team was entirely from Six Nations, which had recently won the right among First Nations fire departments to represent the province by virtue of a victory in an earlier contest.
