DNR investigating invasive species in Turtle Lake

BEMIDJI -- The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources have discovered an invasive species infesting Turtle Lake near Bemidji.

According to a DNR press release, staff discovered starry stonewort, an invasive form of macro algae that can produce dense mats which can interfere with use of the lake. The algae has the ability to choke out native plants, and possibly alter the habitat for young fish.

The discovery in Turtle Lake is the second known infestation of the species in Minnesota. The DNR said the state's first infestation was confirmed last year in Lake Koronis, and since then numerous surveys of lakes have been conducted.
