Class helps Native American students prepare for high school

Starting high school can be intimidating for new students. It can be even more intimidating as a minority who, statistically, faces a deck stacked against educational success.

That’s why School District 2 holds a two-week summer class, High School 101, for Native American students to help them transition from middle school to high school. Almost 30 freshman from middle schools in SD2 and other districts will spend another few days at Senior High before leaving for a three-day tour of colleges across Montana next week. Students can earn half a credit.

On Friday, students researched tribal symbols and war and medicine shields before making a personal shield with cardboard. The lesson blended artistic fun with research and cultural awareness.
