A year after Riverton shooting, views vary on need for hate crime law

It’s been just over a year since Ron Clyde murdered Stallone Trosper and critically injured James “Sonny” Goggles when he shot them at a Riverton, Wyo., detox center.

Both victims were Native American. Many people believed the shooting was racially motivated, yet Clyde wasn’t charged with a hate crime — because Wyoming didn’t have a hate crime law.

A year later the state still doesn’t, something Democratic candidates in Fremont County hope to change if elected. Their Republican opponents say such legislation isn’t a priority.
