Gary Wayne "Gander" Headbird, Sr., Beshigoogahbow (one who stands alone), age 58, of Cass Lake, began his journey into the spirit world on Aug. 3, 2016, at the Cass Lake Hospital. He was born on Jan. 23, 1958 in Cass Lake to Emmanuel Louis Headbird and Helen Jean (Losh) Headbird.

He was a lifelong Cass Lake resident who enjoyed and loved his family dearly. He was always busy with outdoor activities in the woodlands of the leech lake reservation such as; ricing, pine cone gathering, bough picking and of course he greatly enjoyed Indian arts and crafts particularly his birch bark work. He was employed as a carpenter, woodsman and heavy equipment operator.

Those welcoming him and guiding him into the spirit world are his father Emmanuel and brothers; Randolph, Emmanuel Jr., Darryl and Bert Headbird.

Those he leaves behind to cherish and carry on his memory are his mother, Helen Headbird; sons, Gary, Jr., Garrett and Joseph Headbird, all of Cass Lake; daughter, Kaelynne Anderson of Cass Lake;, Brother, Thomas Headbird; sisters, Wanda (Bill) Croaker, Tina (Cowboy) Headbird, Susan Headbird and Nancy (Barney) Kingbird and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A wake for "Gander" will begin at 5:00 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, and continue until his 11:00 a.m. traditional service on Sunday, Aug. 7, all being held in the Mission Community Center, Cass Lake. His spiritual advisor will be __________. Those laying "Gander" to rest are Michael Headbird, Emmanuel Headbird Jr., Jordan Headbird, Thomas Headbird, Jr., Bradley Croaker and Ben Cameron Jr. Alternate pallbearer will be Bill Croaker Jr. Honorary pallbearers are all of his family and friends. Interment will be in the Prince of Peace Cemetery, Cass Lake.
