Spiritual Run for sobriety travels through Bemidji

Runners participate in the 20th annual Anishinaabe Spiritual Run run along Bemidji Avenue North early Wednesday evening. The annual event started in Red Lake Wednesday morning. The run will continue for four days until they reach the Fond du Lac reservation. The event started in 1996 as a cooperative effort between the Red Lake, Leech Lake, White Earth and Fond du Lac tribes, who wanted to carry a message of recovery and healthy lifestyles to Indian communities on foot through a series of walks and runs in each respective community. The effort soon became an annual event that culminated with a celebration of sobriety powwow in Sawyer Minn.
