MDA Farmfest exhibit to feature farm safety, water quality, and much more

Farmers and visitors encouraged to stop by the MDA booth #305 S

ST. PAUL, Minn. – It’s almost August and that means it’s time for Minnesota’s largest outdoor farm show – Farmfest. This year at the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s (MDA) booth, farmers can learn more about the popular Minnesota Agricultural Water Quality Certification Program (MAWQCP) and the new tractor rollover rebate program.

Farmfest is August 2-4, 2016, at the Gilfillan Estate near Redwood Falls, MN. Hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 2 and 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, August 3-4.

The MAWQCP is a voluntary program that recognizes and rewards farmers who implement and maintain approved conservation practices that protect Minnesota’s water and groundwater. Farmers who become certified are deemed to be in compliance with any new water quality rules and standards for a period of 10 years. Farmers and ranchers are encouraged to see for themselves how this innovative new program can work on their land.

The MAWQCP will host a media day from 12:00 –12:45p.m. on Wednesday, August 3. Certified farmers will be on hand to discuss the program and the water quality conservation measures they’ve implemented. Program staff and technical experts will also be available to answer questions.

Farmers are also encouraged to learn more about the MDA’s new Rollover Protective Structures (ROPS) Program. The program reimburses farmers and schools at least 70 percent of the cost of purchasing, shipping, and installing a rollover protection kit—a roll bar and seatbelt—limiting applicants’ cost per tractor to no more than $500. It also provides help to farmers with identifying and pricing the appropriate rollover kits for their tractors.

Information on the MDA’s more than 25 grant programs – from livestock to research – will also be available.

The MDA is located in Booth #305 S, north of Seed Road on 3rd Street.
