Playoff holes help narrow field at the Birchmont

BEMIDJI — Extra holes were needed in multiple matches to help whittle down the men’s championship field to eight contestants at the Birchmont Golf Tournament at the Bemidji Town and Country Club on Thursday.

Back-to-back matches involving Bemidji golfers went to sudden death Thursday afternoon. Bemidji’s Toby Palmiscno prevailed in 19 holes over Grand Forks’ Adam Van Raden, who took down defending champion Nick Schaefer in the first round of match play on Wednesday.

“It was back and forth the whole round. Adam played well and I played well, it was just a shot here or there that was the difference,” Palmiscno said. “I had momentum coming into the playoff and I think that helped a lot because I won (hole No.) 18 to get to the playoff and then that carried over to the first playoff hole.”
