Raising the flag for Red Lake

The Red Lake Nation flag was raised at Bemidji City Hall on Wednesday to commemorate the birthday of Roger Jourdain, the first Red Lake tribal chairman. In 2011, then-Bemidji Mayor Dave Larson signed a proclamation stating every year on July 27 would be Roger Jourdain Day in Bemidji. Jourdain, who was elected to the position in 1959, held the role for 31 years. During that time, new homes were built, better roads were constructed and retail centers were established, according to the city's proclamation. Additionally, Jourdian helped establish the Red Lake Nation Tribal Information Center, Library and Archives.
