Thursday's storm packed estimated 100 mph winds

BEMIDJI—Thursday's damaging thunderstorm packed winds estimated at more than 100 miles per hour, officials said Friday.

The Beltrami County Emergency Management department and the National Weather Service office in Grand Forks completed damage assessments Friday after storms Tuesday and Thursday in the region. Officials assessed areas around Arctic Road and Polaris Road near Puposky and also throughout the city of Bemidji.

Officials said Thursday's storm caused widespread wind damage across much of southern Beltrami County, with a concentrated area of damage on Bemidji's north side. Based on damages to trees, structures and power poles, peak winds are estimated to have been between 100-105 miles per hour, the equivalency of a strong EF1 tornado, said Chris Muller, director of Beltrami County Emergency Management.
