Spirit Lake community continues to rise up against meth abuse

Part I focused on a newly formed group of tribal members and others who live on Spirit Lake Reservation and are working toward solutions for the meth abuse problem.

Unlike any other region of the United States, an Indian reservation is unique in that the enforcement of laws is often quite complex.

Tribes across the nation are limited in their ability to dole out punishment to non-tribal members who commit crimes on reservations. Unless a crime rises to the level that the state or federal government decides to prosecute, non-members often get away with light punishment, or none at all.
