Mille Lacs County, Ojibwe cross swords over law enforcement

A rapidly deteriorating conflict between Mille Lacs County and the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe is complicating enforcement of the law on the reservation.

Land that makes up the northern portion of the county overlaps with land that makes up the reservation. Thus, the Mille Lacs County Sheriff's Office and the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Tribal Police had a cooperative agreement governing the relationship between the two law enforcement agencies.

That is, until the Mille Lacs County Board voted June 21 to revoke the agreement.
