BEMIDJI -- Police Chief Mike Mastin has been fighting the Bemidji’s reputation as a high-crime area for years, and a recent report from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety could help him make his case.
In 2013, Bemidji had the highest crime rate for a city in Minnesota, and in 2014 the second-highest. But new data from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension now places the city at No. 5, with an 8 percent decrease in the overall crime rate.
Beltrami County also saw a slight drop in overall crime, with 1,471 instances in 2014 and 1,432 in 2015. This is part of a decade-long downward trend in the county’s crime rate.
