Severe thunderstorm downs trees, powerlines

BEMIDJI -- A fast-moving, powerful thunderstorm moved through Bemidji on Tuesday afternoon, knocking down trees and powerlines and briefly flooding some city streets.

According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest part of the storm moved through Bemidji at about 4:30 p.m., with heavy rain and winds in excess of 40 miles per hour, with some winds expected stronger than 60 mph. The thunderstorm was part of a larger storm system moving east through Minnesota on Tuesday afternoon. The storm was expected to hit the Grand Rapids and Hibbing areas later Tuesday as it moved northeast.
