Collection of photographs provides rare snapshot of changing times for 19th century Plains Indians

LINCOLN — A cache of previously unknown photographs are among the most important 19th century images of Plains Indians in northwest Nebraska because they tell a story of a land and culture in transition, historians say.

The newly published photographs from an Indian agency near what became Fort Robinson are from a period of traumatic change for Arapaho and Oglala Lakota Tribes on the Northern Plains — the end of tribal traditional lifestyles and the beginning of restriction to reservations. It was the period during and after the Great Sioux War that included the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
