Suicide Prevention Event Celebrates 10 years of Promoting Hope

This year will mark the 10th anniversary of the Run/Walk/Skate for Suicide Prevention in Bemidji. The event will be held at the Sanford Event Center in Bemidji on Saturday, September 10th. The Run/Walk/Skate for Suicide Prevention is a major community awareness event held in September every year in observance of National Suicide Prevention Week. Participation has grown each year reaching 500 participants, volunteers, and spectators at last year's event.

The former non-profit, Healthy Community Health Kids, was the original home for the Suicide Prevention Program and the Headwaters Alliance for Suicide Prevention. Community member, Marcy LaCroix organized the very first 5K event as a part of her internship with the Suicide Prevention Program. The event was more than a learning experience in an internship for Marcy as she has been touched personally by suicide as a loss survivor. Marcy has been a part of the planning of the Run/Walk/Skate for Suicide Prevention every year since.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary the planning committee invited high schools throughout Beltrami County to participate in a contest to develop a new logo for the event. The winner of the student logo contest is Alyssa Daken, 17 years of age who recently graduated from Kelliher High School. Alyssa stated she entered the contest because she loves graphic design but mostly because the topic is "near and dear" to her heart and being a part of raising awareness is important. Alyssa will be entering Bemidji State University this coming fall to major in graphic design. Her email is VertigoghGraphics@gmail.com if you are interested in hiring her to design your logo!
