Can GOP chip into Democratic dominance on Montana Indian reservations?
MISSOULA - Bruce Meyers, the only Republican Native American in Montana’s Legislature, has some simple advice for his GOP brethren for campaigning on the reservation: Emphasize shared values, honor local officials and elders, and, above all – lighten up.
“Humor is the No. 1 value in Indian country,” he told a roomful of Republican candidates at the party’s state platform convention in Missoula this weekend. “The quicker you can give an appropriate joke, the quicker people will recognize you and say, `Hey, he knows how to laugh – they’re not all straight-laced, they like to laugh.”
