County revokes law enforcement agreement with the Band

The Mille Lacs County Board passed a resolution today, June 21 during the regular county board meeting, to revoke the current law enforcement agreement held between the Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Office and Mille Lacs Band Tribal Police Department. The revocation will take place officially July 21 unless the two entities can successfully negotiate a new law enforcement agreement.

According to Joe Walsh, Mille Lacs County Attorney, what this essentially means is that according to Minnesota statutes 626.90 if there is no law enforcement agreement between the county and the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, the Mille Lacs Band Police Department will no longer be able to enforce state laws within the boundaries of the 61,000 acre reservation or trust land.

“What happened today is tremendously unfortunate,” Walsh said. “But it’s the inevitable result of a series of decisions made by the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe. Simply put, the Cooperative Agreement was no longer cooperative. I will do whatever I can, clear my schedule, and meet whenever and wherever with any Mille Lacs Band representatives to try to put together a new Cooperative Agreement.”
