Dangerous conditions persist at Native American schools

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Native American students in dozens of schools around the country could be studying, and in some cases living, in unsafe conditions. But the government’s Indian Affairs department is falling behind in inspections and has no idea how many of its schools are safe.

The agency didn’t examine about a third of its schools last year, even though it is supposed to do health and safety inspections every year, according to an audit by Government Accountability Office. Inspectors haven’t been to some schools in years.
