More data needed to fix sentencing disparities for American Indian defendants

At a meeting in Arizona this week, a panel of judges, prosecutors and tribal officials said there isn’t enough data to tell if American Indian defendants get treated unfairly in state and federal courts.

The group is part of an effort looking at how U.S. sentencing practices and guidelines affect Indians and its first review in a decade. It found perceptions in Indian Country range from thinking Indians get lighter sentences to harsher ones that do non-Indians, the Associated Press reported Wednesday.
