David was born in the Philippines on March 20, 1937 to Eduardo and Asuncion (Florido) Cruz. He grew up in a large, loving family of 12 siblings. David graduated from Cebu Medical Institute in October 1963. He finished his training in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He enjoyed a long career in the medical field, specializing in Emergency Medicine and Family Practice. His passion was Emergency Medicine where he recently retired from Red Lake Indian Hospital in May 2016, after 53 years of working as a doctor. His career legacy is best remembered by his patients for his kind, light hearted healing touch.

Though he enjoyed his career, his priority was spending quality time with his wife, his children, and his grandchildren. There was rarely a time that you'd find him without a grandchild sitting on his lap. David also enjoyed bowling, golfing, and watching sporting events on TV. He is remembered for his outpouring of generosity and his dedication to servant leadership. Some of the fondest memories come from his spectacular 4th of July celebrations and the Wisconsin Dells trips with his family.

He is lovingly survived by his wife, Mary Lou (Yamka); his children, Dr. Karen (Andrew) Brenneman, Lawrence (Maila) Cruz, Richard (Brenda) Cruz, Dr. Ronald (Lisa) Cruz, Elena (Landon) McKeown, and Dr. Elisa (Brian) Williams; his grandchildren, Granger Brenneman, Tom Cruz, Darrell Ward, Danyelle Konop, Lily and Ellie Cruz, Caden, Cole, Keegan and Konnor McKeown, and Isaiah and Brenna Williams, as well as six siblings and six great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his mother and father-in-law, Louis and Regina Yamka; five siblings and one grandchild, Christian McKeown.
