Leg Up For The Little Guys: Why Whole Foods Has Loaned $20 Million To Local Producers

When Native American Natural Foods got their dried buffalo and fruit-based Tanka Bars into their first Whole Foods store in 2012, they celebrated with a lunchtime party at their headquarters on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Everybody cheered at the announcement.

But then, one of the employees piped up: ”I know it’s important, but can you tell me, what’s a Whole Foods?” recalls CEO Karlene Hunter, who started the company in 2007 with Mark Tilsen using traditional Oglala Lakota recipes.
