Day One: 6th Annual Red Lake Nation Elder's Conference held in Red Lake - P17

RED LAKE - On Monday, May 9, 2016 the 6th Annual Red Lake Nation Elder's Conference began at 8 AM at the Red Lake Casino Event Center with registration and breakfast.

Chairman Darrell Seki Sr. gave the welcome and opening remarks, followed by an exhibition by Larry Yazzie and the Native Pride Dancers.

Two presentations took place starting at around 10 AM. The first was Dementia Awareness, presented by Karen (Holstein) Bedeau and Carol Priest, and the second was a presentation on "Working with Social Security" by Tammy Fluto and Connie Berg.

After a walleye and roast beef lunch, more afternoon sessions took place. Cheri Goodwin, Director of Red Lake Family and Children Services, gave her presentation on the current drug epidemic and raising healthy children; John Nicholson presented "Balancing Healthy Lifestyles,"; Gardening Tips and a Food Demo were presented by Michael Vanhorn and Cherilyn Spears; and Black Bird Entertainment from Belcourt, ND provided musical entertainment along with a dance contest for elders.

There were several booths with additional information on programs and resources situated throughout the lobby area of the Casino Event Center, and evening activities beginning at 6 PM included a cribbage tournament, Black Jack Tournament and Casino slot tournament.

Limo rides were also offered earlier that afternoon.

The second day of the conference is scheduled to begin again at 8 AM, with the welcome and opening remarks by Gordon Bailey, Red Lake's oldest living elder.

A Talent Show is scheduled at 9:30 AM, followed by a Youth Showcase by the Red Lake Immersion Program.

The closing ceremony will take place after lunch about 1 PM.
