Blackduck wins big, routs Red Lake in 8A playoff opener

BLACKDUCK — The Blackduck High School girls softball team had no difficulty in beating Red Lake in the first round of the Section 8A North Sub-Section tournament Tuesday, winning 36-0 in five innings.

The Drakes, the No. 3 seed in the North Sub-Section, were held scoreless in the first inning but they more than made up for that in the innings that followed.

Blackduck scored 10 runs in the second before adding 13 runs each in the third and fourth innings.

Kara Draeger started inside the circle for the Drakes (12-8) and struck out six in two innings of work. The sixth-seeded Warriors (0-10) loaded the bases in the top of the first after drawing two walks and a hit by pitch, but Draeger retired the final two batters to get out of the jam.

Michaela Sparby pitched the final three innings and recorded eight strikeouts.

A total of 11 Blackduck hitters drove in a run in the contest. Charli Schocker, Breanna Enger, Brandi Kilde and Brooke Grundmeier recorded two RBI each to tie for the team-lead.

Blackduck will next face North No. 2 seed Red Lake Falls at 2 p.m. Thursday in the North Sub-Section semifinals at Lake of the Woods High School.
