$53 million down the toilet? Transgender bathroom ban could cost Marion schools

Marion County Public Schools stands to lose $53 million in federal funding if the School Board continues to block transgender students from using bathrooms of their gender identity.

The loss of funding would likely not happen anytime soon, however, because the transgender bathroom issue is so unsettled nationwide.

School officials said the district stands to lose $30 million for food service and $20 million in federal grants, primarily for Title I programs. The remaining $3 million in potential losses would be in funds for high school Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps and Medicaid, according to Jennifer Cole, the district's director of budgeting.
