TRANSPORTATION FORWARD COALITION STATEMENT

Coalition Responds to Governor's Compromise Proposal, Calls on Legislature to Fund Minnesota’s Transportation Needs for All

St. Paul, Minnesota ( May 16, 2016 ) – As the clock runs down on the legislative session, today a coalition of Twin Cities and Greater Minnesota community leaders urged the Minnesota Legislature to increase statewide funding for all transportation modes.

The coalition released this statement in response to Governor Dayton's $6 billion compromise proposals today:

“With the Governor’s proposal, we’re seeing significant movement toward action. We look forward to a counter offer from House leadership. Transportation Forward stands for a deal that includes all constituents. People across the state rely on and choose multiple ways of getting around. We call on the legislature to continue moving toward a compromise that funds all modes: transit and bike/pedestrian infrastructure along with roads and bridges. In this last week of session, we think Minnesotans want to see more productivity and less partisanship. They want to see the legislature finally get transportation done and done right,” said Transportation Forward Chair, Dave Van Hattum.

Transportation funding is especially crucial in this legislative session. Current funding lags behind existing needs, a problem that will be exacerbated as the population of the state continues to grow. Whether Minnesota can create affordable, accessible, and well maintained transportation infrastructure will impact economic health and quality of life for residents around the state.
