Reeling in the fish. . . and the dollars: Fishing opener has tremendous economic impact

BEMIDJI -- For the first time since the ice melted away, Lake Bemidji and surrounding waters will once again become a lively scene as boats and bait splash on through to usher in Minnesota’s fishing season opener.

And local cash registers will “ring” the praises of one of the state’s great traditions as anglers near and far make an economic impact.

"Boats begin showing up around town and everyone's filled with anticipation and excitement," said Susan Goudge, executive director of Visit Bemidji. "Every retailer inventories up for the influx of fisherman to the area."
