11th Annual Youth Leadership Conference kicks off in Red Lake - P5
"Shaping the Future" is this year's theme
Conference began on Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at Red Lake High School the Red Creek Drum Group, and facilitators Chance Rush and Murphy Thomas, followed by the welcome address by Red Lake Tribal Chairman Darrell Seki Sr.
The Red Lake Youth Council presented their address and introduced their members, followed by Key Note speakers Kasey Nicholson and Bobby Wilson.
Workshops were held in the afternoon until 3:10 PM. They included Moccasin Making with Vicky Fineday; Cultural Identity with Kasey Nicholson; Walking Together in a Good Way by Rueben Crowfeather; Healthy Relationships with Happy Frejo; the Red Lake Youth Council by Youth Council Members; Moltivation with Chance Rush; Suicide Effects on Family & Prevention by Jerome Lebeaux, Michael Peters and Jerald Cobenais; Healing Through Art by Bobby Wilson; Making Good Choices Beyond School with Rachel Donnell; and Jewelry Making by Don Ziemann and Patty Stomberg.
A Variety Show took place at the Red Lake Humanities Center at 6 PM, featuring music, motivation, a hypnotist, comedians and a beauty pageant.
The three-day conference will continue on Thursday and Friday with more speakers and workshops, and the Youth Council Banquet starting at 5 PM on Thursday at the Red Lake Casino Event Center.
Friday's activities include Seat Belt Challenge Finals, a Skate Park Competition and a 3 on 3 basketball tournament.
