Teacher protests close most Detroit schools again today

The American Federation of Teachers and its Detroit local are seeking to pressure state lawmakers to pass a bailout plan for the city’s troubled school system. Without action at the statehouse, the district has said it won’t be able to make payroll over the summer, leaving many teachers uncompensated for work during the school year.

“It’s tantamount to wage theft,” said Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers. She said educators want to be in their classrooms with students but need a guarantee that they will be paid for their work.
