Keep the games alive: Tour aims to keep Native American sports strong

RED LAKE -- The pitter patter of a rubber ball could be heard skipping across the floorboards inside St. Mary’s Mission School on Thursday morning.

What the students were playing in the gymnasium was far from a typical game one would expect them to play -- shinny.

Shinny is just one of many traditional Native American games that area school children are being taught as a part of the Northern Indigenous Games that will take place at BSU this weekend.
