Plans underway to construct memorial to Indian veterans

WASHINGTON, D.C. –– “Native Americans have overlooked decades of persecution and broken promises to serve as courageous servicemen and women in the U.S. Armed Forces. When the National Native American Veteran Memorial is completed in Washington, D.C., their selfless contributions to American democracy and freedom will never be forgotten,” said former Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell, co-chair of the Advisory Committee for the Memorial, now being developed by the Smithsonian Museum.

“In December 2013, The U.S. Congress authorized the establishment of the National Native American Veterans’ Memorial on the grounds of the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), thereby giving “all Americans the opportunity to learn of the proud and courageous tradition of service of Native Americans in the Armed Forces of the United States,” explained Dr. Herman Viola, Curator Emeritus, NMAI and senior advisor for the memorial project.
