Shawnee man sentenced for stealing from Citizen Pottawatomi Nation

A Shawnee man who pleaded guilty to embezzling from an Indian tribe apologized Wednesday before an Oklahoma City federal judge ordered him to pay back $181,763 in restitution.

"I am sorry. I am paying the money back because it wasn't mine to have," Thomas Bierd said during his sentencing. "All of this has been crazy. I've gone to counseling to deal with the shame and guilt. I can't change what happened but ... this isn't Tom Bierd."
