The meaning behind the dancing: Larry Yazzie teaches Horace May students about song and dance in Native culture

BEMIDJI -- The man wearing tassels and fluff, and feathers on his head, parted the sea of kids who fell as silent as kids can fall.

They sat or kneeled in the seemingly uncomfortable positions of youth, as Larry Yazzie and the bustles attached to his back bobbed past them, toward his just-as-brightly dressed partners who were there Wednesday to teach Horace May students about song and dance in Native culture.

“I’ve been dancing through life,” Yazzie, founder of Native Pride Productions, told the students ranging from first to third grade.
