11 suicide attempts in one night: Attawapiskat cries for help

After 11 suicide attempts on Saturday night in the remote northern Ontario community, officials in Attawapiskat First Nation declared a state of emergency and will hold a strategic meeting Monday.

“They’re at a point now where they’ve been overwhelmed. Their staff are tired. They’re in doubt,” Chief Jonathon Solomon of the regional Mushkegowuk Council, which represents eight member nations including Attawapiskat, said on Sunday after the state of emergency was declared.
