Leech Lake votes in new tribal chairperson, re-elects district rep
BEMIDJI -- The Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe held its primary election Tuesday with an incumbent and a newcomer earning victories at the polls.
In the race for Leech Lake Tribal Chairperson, Faron Jackson Sr. defeated incumbent Carri Jones and five other challengers with 1,058 votes, a percentage of 52.72. Carri Jones meanwhile received 30.89 percent of the vote with a count of 620.
"I was really humbled when the numbers were tallied," Jackson said. "It's a big honor when tribal members vote for you. I had a very strong campaign committee, and we came together and worked very hard as a team."
