Sugar maple stand: Governor cancels visit, but pipeline opponents' sugarbush camp carries on

NEAR SAWYER — When Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton canceled a scheduled meeting Wednesday with oil pipeline opponents camping in the woods on the Fond du Lac Reservation, his office cited conditions that were "very treacherous — making the visit impossible."

The cancellation didn't change what people were doing at the camp, where maple syrup production is underway, but it affected their mood.

"I did cry," said Korey Northrup, Honor the Earth's Great Lakes organizer and a member of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.
