The headstone sits 1,633 miles from home, arranged in a neat row beside those of the other children.
It’s smooth and white, the same type of military grave marker found at Gettysburg National Cemetery. This one rests in a well-kept lawn bordered by a black wrought iron fence in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
Carved on the front is a name, Dickens, and a date, January 22, 1883.
