GEAR UP investigation leads to three charged with felonies

PLATTE — South Dakota received its first public accounting Wednesday from state investigators on who and how much may have been stolen from the federal GEAR UP program by people associated with Midcentral Education Cooperative.

State Attorney General Marty Jackley said three people were arrested in connection with various crimes but the family who evidently benefited most died last September.

Jackley said nothing further has come to light regarding his findings from last fall that Midcentral business manager Scott Westerhuis shot to death his wife, Nicole Westerhuis, and their four children in the early hours of Sept. 17, 2015.
