POSITION TITLE: Director of Student Success – Full-Time

DEPARTMENT: Academics

REPORTS TO: VP of Academic Affairs & Operations

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

REVISED: February 2016

POSITION START DATE: August 1, 2016

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS: The Director of Student Success works closely with the VP of Academic Affairs, the Director of Student Services, the Retention & Recruitment Counselor, faculty, and students with the goal of supporting student success, retention and the mission of the college.

ACCOUNTABILTY: The Director of Student Success reports directly to the Vice of Academic Affairs & Operations.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Meet with RLNC students individually and in groups to provide counseling, teach life coping skills and provide support to improve student success and retention.

• Assist Red Lake Nation College students with follow through on recommended referral services.

• Create student success plans, monitor attendance, and work closely with students on academic warning and/or returning from suspension to aid them in returning to good academic standing.

• Promptly address, and utilize external resources as necessary, in resolving mental health crises among Red Lake Nation College students.

• Collaborate with the Recruitment & Retention Counselor to improve student retention.

• Work to identify early, assist, and monitor RLNC "at risk" students who appear to be struggling academically or socially.

• Assist the College in facilitating the resolution of faculty and student issues that require a thorough knowledge of at-risk students.

• Create an effective meeting and communication system to maintain contact with students and staff to help with student retention.

• Serve as the lead Career Development staff member to direct students towards a four-year educational program or job placement.

• Provide individual and group student success training and counseling on life coping skills and problem solving skills.

• Monitor attendance and academic performance of students enrolled in Postsecondary Enrollment Option (PSEO) at Red Lake High School and Red Lake Nation College.

• Chair PASS Committee.

• Teach at least one class at RLNC per semester. This will be a paid teaching assignment through LLTC.

• Other tasks as assigned.

EXPERIENCE/REQUIREMENTS:

• Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of RLNC.

• Knowledge of Anishinaabe culture and demonstrated ability to work with Native communities.

• Clinical experience in providing professional counseling and/or therapy.

• Positive, supportive, open, and helpful personality required.

• Professional and highly developed human relations skills are required to work with the large number and variety of people in this position.

• Knowledge, experience and comfort working in higher education and an academic environment.

• Commitment to community and culture based education.

• Cultural sensitivity and experience working with a reservation community, experience working in the Red Lake community is preferred.

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum requirement of a Master's Degree in Counseling, Social Work, or related area.

• Experience in higher education preferred.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

• Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.

• Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.

• Possession of a valid MN driver's license.
